KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo kicks off its women’s soccer program, with the goal of having a coach in place August 1.
“We are looking for a dynamic leader who has collegiate coaching experience, and can recruit the right type of talent to IU Kokomo,” said Greg Cooper, athletic director, adding that having a coach in place in August allows for a full year of recruiting, before play begins in fall 2019.
The team, with approximately 30 members, will play at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, and will be one of two River States Conference (RSC) teams with a turf playing surface, which offers more chances to play in wet conditions, and also reduces the chance of concussion.
“We’re really looking for the right fit, the right person to start a program from scratch,” Cooper said. “We want someone who understands the kinds of students who fit in our program, and is willing to be active with our teams in the community.”
The Cougars will be the 11th women’s soccer team in a strong soccer conference, he said.
Women’s soccer will be the fourth fall sport for the Cougars, in addition to women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. It also has men’s and women’s golf and a women’s tennis team that compete in short fall seasons, but primarily compete in the spring.
The campus also fields teams in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s outdoor track, and men’s baseball.
Coaching applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Apply at Jobs.iu.edu. For more information about IU athletics, or the soccer program, contact Cooper at gregcoop@iuk.edu or go to iukcougars.com.
