J.R. Pico, lecturer in Spanish, noted that students chosen for the honorary can apply for scholarships, attend conferences, and participate in events with members from other schools.
“Having an established and active chapter of the most prestigious Spanish honor society, which is recognized nationwide and internationally, puts us at a superior level in our teaching of Spanish,” he said. “One benefit is the potential to receive scholarships for travel to Spanish-speaking countries, where they can use their foreign language skills in real-life situations, and experience the culture in person.”
Those selected must have completed at least three years, or the equivalent, of college-level Spanish, with an average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in those courses, rank in the upper 35 percent of their class, and completed at least three semesters of college work. Each one also must have genuine interest in Hispanic language and culture, and be of good moral character.
Sarah Heath, associate professor of history, was inducted as an honorary member.
