KOKOMO, Ind. — A veteran Indiana University Kokomo leader now serves as its chief of staff.
Sarah Sarber, with more than 25 years of service, began her duties March 1. As chief of staff, she is the key advisor to Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke, as well as executive leadership and oversees human resources. She also is affirmative action and chief diversity officer for the campus, leading implementation of diversity initiatives and promoting inclusion and equal opportunity employment.
“It is an honor to serve IU Kokomo in this position,” said Sarber, who served as dean of students since 2009. “I have a tremendous love for this campus, and I believe this job is one of the best ways I can contribute. I felt like it was a natural progression and would be an exciting challenge.”
She replaces Gerry Stroman, who retired after more than 30 years at IU Kokomo.
Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke welcomes Sarber to her new role.
“Her legal background, her IU experience and knowledge, her passion for diversity, and her excellent communication skills will serve our campus well,” she said. “I look forward to working with Sarah.”
Sarber began her career at IU Kokomo in 1990 as coordinator of student activities. She also has served as acting director of career service and director of student development and campus life.
One of Sarber’s proudest accomplishments is her role in launching athletics in 2011. The program has grown from women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams, who played in borrowed high school gyms, to nine varsity sports and the addition of Cougar Gym in downtown Kokomo.
“Starting the athletics program taught me I can learn new things, and take on new challenges,” she said. “These programs provide tremendous opportunities for our students to grow, and I am amazed by their dedication, not only in athletics, but in the classrooms. They’ve made me a fan.”
Sarber earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law, a Master of Science in Education from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Science in supervision and organizational leadership from Purdue University.
Indiana University Kokomo serves north central Indiana.
