KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo honored faculty and staff for service, as well as years of service, at the annual Spring Convocation Friday (March 4).
Adjunct faculty member Richard Evans was recognized for 47 years of teaching, with more than 30 in the School of Education, where he prepares future art teachers. Staff members Terri Butler and Lucien Madding also were honored for 35 years of service.
Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke presented the Virgil Hunt Service Award to Karla Farmer Stouse, senior lecturer in English; and Sarah Heath, associate professor of history.
Stouse earned recognition for her “dedication and passion for international student travel,” in particular the Innovation Symposium. Through the years she has taken 75 students on the trip to England and Scotland, planning a careful course of study and raising money to make the experience available to students.
“The Innovation Symposium has been an integral part of changing student lives, “Sciame-Giesecke said. “Karla knows her students, and she is personally invested in each of their success.”
Stouse said Virgil Hunt, who served as IU Kokomo’s first director, is a hero to the campus.
“I feel very honored to be the recipient of an award given in his name,” she said. “Service is both a privilege and a blessing. What you give when you serve, you get back 100 percent.”
Heath’s commitment to inclusiveness on campus, as well as her service as chairperson of the Department of Sociology, History and Political Science also earned praise from the chancellor.
“Sarah has given tremendous service, dedicating herself to being sure our students, faculty, and staff members have a voice, and that we have an inclusiveness culture on our campus,” said Sciame-Giesecke.
Heath said she also was honored to receive the award.
“I believe if you surround yourself with good people, good things happen,” she said. “This award reflects the influence of my friends and colleagues at IU Kokomo.”
