KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo is building new traditions, celebrating its first-ever Homecoming the week of December 3.
Ryan Bowman, director of alumni relations and campus ceremonies, said Homecoming is a way to get current students and graduates excited about the IU Kokomo Cougars basketball team, in its second season. This is the first year the team has competed in the NAIA.
The campus has a full week of activities planned, leading up to the Homecoming basketball game at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 8, when the Cougars take on the Panthers of Purdue North Central. The game is at Kokomo High School.
"We're expecting our bleachers to be full of fans, making some noise for the Cougars," Bowman said. "The team has been very successful this season on the road, and we're excited to finally have a home game. We want our alumni to come be part of these festivities, and to get involved on campus."
Admission to the game is $5 for people 12 and older, and free to faculty, staff, and students, with campus ID. Children younger than 12 also may attend free.
Homecoming events kick off with campus decorating, during "Show Your Spirit Day," on Monday, December 3. Faculty, staff, and students will compete for prizes, which will be given to the group showing the most IU Kokomo spirit.
Students, faculty, alumni and staff are invited to Cosmic Bowling at Kokomo Sports Bowl at 10 p.m. Monday.
Activities on Tuesday, December 4, include the first home basketball season of the year, at 7 p.m. at Kokomo High School. The campus will host a pep rally for the team at 11:45 a.m. in the Kelley Student Center.
Wednesday's activities include finals week survival kits, presented by the IU Kokomo Alumni Association, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center, and a performance by the SumAntics improve troupe from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, alumni are invited to a reception with IU President Michael A. McRobbie, the Board of Trustees, and Interim Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke. All members of the IU Alumni Association may attend the reception, which includes a cash bar and complimentary hors d'oeuvres. To join, go to www.alumni.iu.edu. For more information, contact Gail Daggett at email@example.com or (765) 455-9457.
The Student Alumni Association will sponsor a dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, December 7, in Alumni Hall. The event is free to IU Kokomo students and a guest.
Homecoming will benefit the community during the Can Hunger! Homecoming Carnival, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 8, in the Kelley Student Center. Admission is five canned food items per person, or 15 items per family. The food collected will go to Kokomo Urban Outreach.
Admission includes unlimited use of carnival games, inflatables, the car smash, and other activities. The canned food will be donated to Kokomo Urban Outreach.
During the carnival, alumni are also invited to a free reception in the Art Gallery. Those planning to attend should RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Wrap up the week with the "Naughty and Nice" Christmas concert, performed by the IU Kokomo Crescendos and Diminuendos choirs in Havens Auditorium. Admission to the 7 p.m. concert is free.
Bowman said with a wide variety of Homecoming activities, there should be something to appeal to everyone.
"We hope the community will come be part of the campus family, and join us for the game, carnival, and other public events," he said. "We look forward to seeing many of our alumni family, and our friends. It's going to be an exciting week."
