KOKOMO, Ind. — Parents and children visiting Indiana University Kokomo's Center for Early Childhood Education can Read for the Record, and receive a free book, throughout the month of October.
The center, 2725 S. LaFountain St., is participating in Jumpstart's seventh annual "Read for the Record," featuring the picture book "Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad," by David Soman and Jacky Davis. The activity room offers several ladybug-themed crafts to tie in with the book.
Marilyn Skinner, director of the early childhood education center, said Jumpstart's mission is the same as the center's, preparing every child to enter school prepared to learn and succeed.
"Read for the Record is a nationwide program to encourage all children to read, or to have parents read to them," she said. "We have several hundred families visit our center each month. We plan to give every family that visits in October a copy of the featured book, as a way to encourage them to read to their children, because it helps prepare their children to learn to read when they are older."
Parents may bring their children to the center to receive their book, play in the activity room, and make a craft, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
