Gerry Stroman, assistant vice chancellor of academic affairs, said attending orientation is a great way to learn about the campus and resources available to students.
"We want our new students to come to campus ready to succeed, and going to orientation helps them get started on the right foot," Stroman said. "This is also a chance to meet other students who may be in the same classes. That first day is so much easier when you already know some people."
The day begins at 8 a.m. with registration and breakfast, followed by sessions about student activities, athletics, financial aid, parking, career services, advising, and technology, among other topics.
"Our orientation leaders will help the new students know about the wealth of resources available to them on our campus," she said.
Students are matched with orientation leaders, who are experienced IU Kokomo students. Each student attending orientation receives contact information for one of the leaders, who are available to answer questions or help out during the first few weeks of classes.
Stroman said many new students feel more comfortable asking their peers for help, and the orientation leaders fill that niche. Orientation also includes informative sessions for parents to help their child succeed in college.
"We talk about the difference in expectations from high school to college, and what they can do to help their child acclimate to campus life," she said. "We want the parents to feel very comfortable sending their son or daughter here."
All students who have been admitted to IU Kokomo are welcome to attend. Stroman suggests meeting with an advisor before orientation, to be prepared to register for classes. Students also need to set up computer accounts in order to register.
