KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery opens the 2012 season featuring Indiana printmakers with a new show, “Nature & Nurture,” January 18 to February 18.  The opening reception is from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 18.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Some of the art to be shownThe exhibition is the work of Hoosier artists Carol Fisher, Judy Leiviska, Arlyne Springer, Sharon Somerville and Lisa Van Meter. Tarja Harney, interim gallery director, said several of the artists plan to attend the opening reception. All have exhibited their work in several shows, both in Indiana and nationwide.

The Art Gallery has not featured printmaking for several years, and Harney said the community will enjoy this unique art form. Prints are created by etching or carving into a plate or block, inking it and pressing the image onto paper. The prints included in the show focus on aspects of nature, and several of the artists have talked about the nurturing spirit they feel when creating the art, which led to the exhibition’s theme.

Fisher earned a degree from the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Herron School of Art, where she has taught painting and drawing. She focuses primarily on print making.

Leiviska also graduated from the Herron School of Art. She works in woodcuts and monotypes, and is on Facebook.

Springer, also a Herron graduate, prints monotypes inspired by family treasures such as photographs, letters, stories and antique objects.

Somerville earned a degree from the Herron School and has prints in many permanent collections of nonprofit organizations and private collections.

Van Meter focuses on relief and intaglio printmaking. She has launched a website, www.lisavanmeter.com, and a business, LVM Printmaking Company.

The Art Gallery is located in Alumni Hall. The Gallery is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday; and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
