KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo's athletic program expands to include spring sports, with the addition of men's and women's golf teams.

Golfers will begin competing during the 2015-2016 school year, with Kokomo's Wildcat Creek Golf Course as its home course.

Athletic Director Brandon Podgorski hopes to have about 10 athletes on each team, and said they will be a positive addition to the athletic program.

"Honor and integrity and ethics play a big role in golf," he said. "Those are the types of values we want in our athletic programs. Golfers are student athletes who generally do well in the classroom, and stay here to earn degrees."

Adding golf to the program taps into a local interest, and gives those athletes an exceptional opportunity, according to Todd Gambill, vice chancellor for student services and enrollment management.

"We offer something unique in the region," he said. "Where else can you get an IU degree, which is recognized world wide, for the value? We anticipate great interest in these teams, not only from potential athletes, but from the community. It's going to get people involved with IU Kokomo who might not have been before."

Gambill expects to have at least one home match a year, and said the players also will be able to practice at the American Legion and Kokomo Country Club, which have also agreed to partner with the golf programs, to gain experience on a variety of courses.

He expects to begin the process to hire a coach during the Fall 2014 semester.

IU Kokomo plays in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and is a member of the NAIA. It fields teams in men's and women's cross country, women's volleyball, and men's basketball. Women's basketball will begin their first year of competition in 2014.
