IU Kokomo features student work in new exhibition

March 28, 2019

KOKOMO, Ind. –  The Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery shares the work of students in the New Media, Art, and Technology (NMAT) program, with its annual student exhibition.

The show, which continues through April 12, features more than 30 pieces, including paintings, prints, video, multimedia, and sculpture, created during the 2018-2019 school year.

“Our students are creating some pretty amazing work,” said Tara Scott, gallery director. “Our NMAT program is amazing, and the students are excelling. It’s a great exhibit.”

She noted there are more sculptures than in any previous student exhibition, and she’s excited about the growth in that program.

Jon Reshkus, from Denver, is among the featured sculptors, with his piece titled Seating Arrangement, consisting of interlocked wooden chairs. He’s excited to be part of the show.

“I take great pride in being asked to exhibit,” he said. “It means I’ve succeeded somewhere, and someone sees my work in a positive light.”

The senior discovered a passion for sculpture during a summer 2018 metal welding class, and plans to earn a master’s degree so he can teach art at the college level.

“I like how sculpture captures the environment, and the abstractness of it,” he said. “That’s completely not what I was used to before. I’m used to working in realism with pencils and painting.”

Seating Arrangement almost didn’t make it in the show, he added. It’s actually made up of two pieces that can be moved to change it, and he broke it trying to find just the right look.

“That was kind of depressing,” he said. “It turned out to be a happy accident that it broke, because it turned out better than before.”

He encouraged people to attend the show.

“It’s a good way to see what students are doing here, and to appreciate their hard work and talent,” he said.
