Free activities for students highlight Welcome Week at IU Kokomo

August 21, 2018

KOKOMO, Ind. — The pancakes were flying as Indiana University Kokomo kicked off a full slate of Welcome Week activities for the fall 2018 semester.

Chris Cakes prepared and flipped pancakes across Alumni Hall Monday morning, as eager students caught the flapjacks on their plate, as part of festivities welcoming students back to campus.

Kate Aguilar, coordinator of student life and campus diversity, is excited to have returning students, and to welcome the newest Cougars.

“Not only are these events fun, but it gives new students the opportunity to see how great IU Kokomo is, and to meet new people,” she said. “We want to show each and every student that we care not only about their academic and social life, but their well-being as a whole.”

After beginning with flying pancakes on Monday, activities continued Tuesday, August 21, with free caricatures, a photo booth, and walking tacos.

Wednesday, students can participate in Build with Bears, an event that includes enjoying fun time with friends while also making new ones. This furry event includes free Dan’s Donuts and espresso to go in the Kelley Student Center, Room 130, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Live music, games, and ice cream kick off Thursday’s events, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the campus quad. Welcome Week activities conclude Thursday evening, with a campus barbecue and an appearance by the Barefoot Hawaiian, a Polynesian performing arts company, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Aguilar encouraged all students to find their niche by attending the annual Activities Fair, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, and Thursday, August 30.

Representatives of campus organizations will be on hand to share information, allowing students to ask questions and join those that interest them. Those attending may also learn how to use the IUKLife website. Free pizza is available to those who show they liked the IUK Student Life page on Facebook.
