Bourke looks forward to building on the foundation left by Linda Wallace, who retired July 1 as dean.

“Linda has taken us to a great place, where we are known as a high-quality School of Nursing,” Bourke said. “I want to take us to the next step, where people are more aware of the excellent education we provide to future nurses.”

Mark Canada, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, said IU Kokomo is fortunate to have a leader with Bourke’s background in the School of Nursing.

“She brings a vast amount of knowledge, as well as an entrepreneurial spirit and unsurpassed passion for nursing, to this position.”

Bourke, a Carmel resident, appreciates the opportunities she’s had to grow as a nurse educator including leading curriculum development for the Master of Science in Nursing programs in nurse educator and nurse administration, and for the Family Nurse Practitioner track.

IU Kokomo also sent her to earn certification in computer adaptive testing at the University of Cambridge, in England.

“We have an incredible program, and incredible faculty, who care about our students,” she said. “To me, there’s no other place to work.”

Her goal is for the School of Nursing to focus on student-centered learning.

“I love seeing students engaged in their own learning, and creating instruction that enables them to work with their peers, alongside the faculty, to reinforce their new knowledge,” she said. “Their success and their engagement gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”

Bourke joined the IU Kokomo faculty in 2006, and has been assistant dean of graduate programs since 2011. She earned an Associate of Science in Nursing from Bacone College, a Master of Science in Nursing from IU, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction, with minors in community health nursing and instructional systems technology from IU.

She’s also earned certificates in Rasch Analysis Measurement from University of Western Australia and the University of Leeds Medical School in England. Bourke is a certified nurse educator from the National League for Nursing Academic Educator program.

Indiana University Kokomo serves north central Indiana.
