Annual student art exhibit features photography, print making

March 23, 2017
KOKOMO, Ind. — When Ashley Taylor enrolled at Indiana University Kokomo, she brought with her a love of photography.

As a sophomore, she discovered a passion for print making — and then learned to combine the two to create new art.

Her artwork is featured in the IU Kokomo Art Gallery’s annual student art exhibition, opening Wednesday, March 29.

As a creative arts minor, Taylor, from Logansport, has her own featured section in the exhibit, showing her artistic growth.

“All of my pieces are focused around me taking my own photographs,” she said, starting with a picture of her camera.

“The one of my camera is special to me, because it is what made everything else happen,” she said.

She’s also recreated one of her portraits as linoleum cut print, and made layered screen print collage with two other photographs.

“Photography is my main medium, but I’ve figured out with print making, I can do photography in a different form,” she said. “I learned I could use my photos to create other art.

Taylor graduates in May, and plans to earn a master’s degree in art therapy.

The student exhibition opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, and continues through Saturday, April 15. It is free and open to the public in the Gallery, in the IU Kokomo Library Building, 2300 S. Washington St. Free parking is available on campus.

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Fridays.
