February 6, 2017

KOKOMO, Ind. — Current and potential college students, high school seniors, and their parents can get free help filling their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at College Goal Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 12, at Indiana University Kokomo.

The campus is one of 40 sites statewide offering free help in filing the FAFSA from financial aid professionals. The FAFSA is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans at most colleges, universities, and vocational/technical schools nationwide.

Becky Lefler, an academic advisor leading College Goal Sunday, encouraged families to attend for free expert advice to file financial aid paperwork correctly. She noted that the FAFSA is the first step to applying for all federal and state funds, and for some funds available from individual campuses.

“Our goal is to lower student indebtedness,” she said. “Part of that is gathering financial aid information early. There are many changes in federal regulations, and we will be there to answer questions about them. Applying earlier will help students have financial aid notifications from their schools of choice, which will help them know their final price tag for each one.”

Registration begins at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall in the Kelley Student Center, 2300 S. Washington St., with sessions in the Library labs, ILC 1 and ILC 2. Free parking is available on campus.

Those attending should bring completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 forms, and other 2015 income and benefits information. Students and parents are encouraged to apply for a U.S. Department of Education FSA ID at at fsaid.ed.gov

The FAFSA form must be filed by March 10 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid.

Students who attend College Goal Sunday and submit a completed application will automatically be entered in a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship.

College Goal Sunday is sponsored by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association.
