Shuttle connects IU Kokomo to downtown

September 2, 2016

KOKOMO, Ind. — Downtown Kokomo becomes part of the Indiana University Kokomo campus, via free shuttle service.

Starting September 1, the Cougar Bus is available every other Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The bus departs from campus every 30 minutes, dropping riders off at the Union Street Art Gallery, and then returning them to campus.

Mark Canada, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said the shuttle service coincides with the beginning of the Kokomo Experience and You (KEY) program, which emphasizes hands-on education.

“The world makes a great classroom, and the shuttle extends our education beyond our classroom out into the community,” he said. “It will make it easy for faculty to bring students downtown to apply their learning to the world outside campus.

For example, art professors can take students to see downtown art galleries, business professors can engage students in the study of economics of a vibrant downtown, allied health sciences classes can visit the YMCA, or science students can examine sustainability efforts in an urban setting.

“There is something downtown for students and faculty in all kinds of disciplines,” Canada said, adding that the free service is available to faculty and staff, who are encouraged to use it to have lunch in a downtown restaurant, shop on the square, and visit the IU Kokomo Union Street Art Gallery.

The free service is available to the public as well, he said.

“We look forward to using the shuttle to bring community members to campus, as well,” he said. “We hope to offer a tour of our new campus sculptures, and people all over Kokomo could park downtown and take the shuttle to campus to see our sculptures, campus art gallery, and more."

Future shuttle service dates include September 15 and 29, and October 13 and 27, with more to be added if there is sufficient interest. Pick up points are in the parking lot east of the Kelley Student Center, and the Union Street Art Gallery, 209 North Union Street.

Indiana University Kokomo serves north central Indiana.
