IU Kokomo to add baseball, tennis, to athletics programs

September 8, 2016
KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo expands its spring sports programs, with the addition of a men’s baseball team and a women’s tennis team.

Both teams will begin competition during the 2017-2018, with Kokomo Municipal Stadium as the home field for the baseball team. The tennis team’s home court will be at Foster Park.

Athletic Director Greg Cooper said talks began about adding baseball soon after the city built the stadium, and became more serious with the success and popularity of the Prospect League Kokomo Jackrabbits.

“The ability to recruit students and play in a facility like that is something that would make any athletic department jealous,” Cooper said. “The addition of baseball and tennis at IU Kokomo is a natural fit, and will allow the university to reach a new group of students, parents, families, and community members who may not have otherwise considered IU Kokomo as a destination of choice for their continued education and involvement.”

Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke thanked Mayor Greg Goodnight for allowing the team to use the stadium.

“It is a grand facility, that will enhance our program,” she said. “With the support of our community, we continue to build a quality athletic program that allows students to focus on both their academic and athletic goals. Ultimately, our goal is to support students to earn a college degree. We have found that student athletes are more likely to graduate in four years.”

Cooper said women’s tennis is also a good fit for the campus, because all of the area high schools, as well as the majority of the River States Conference schools, offer the program.

“We have a great facility and location at Foster Park that we are working on with the city as well,” he said. “The more partnerships we can build across this community only strengthen the campus and the city. We are trying to do our part to continue that growth.”

He said both teams would compete in a short fall program, with their championship seasons in the spring. They join men’s and women’s golf as the campus’ spring sports.

IU Kokomo competes in the River States Conference, and is a member of the NAIA. In addition to the golf teams, it fields a women’s volleyball team, which won the its conference in 2015; men’s and women’s cross country teams, and men’s and women’s basketball teams.
