Campus Art Gallery showcases faculty work in new exhibition

September 12, 2016
KOKOMO, Ind. — From the chaos of recent tornadoes in her Kokomo neighborhood, Yunjin Woo finds inspiration for art.

Woo, who recently joined IU Kokomo’s faculty as an assistant professor of fine arts, is one of seven featured in the campus Art Gallery’s annual Faculty Exhibition, which opens Wednesday, September 14.

She created the installation piece, I Was Hoping You Wouldn’t Mind a Hug, with debris collected in her neighborhood following the August 24 tornadoes.

“As a new resident, this exhibition is a kind of introduction of my work to the community, and I wanted to make something relevant to the lives of people here, including myself,” she said. “I felt the tornadoes stirred up and brought a lot of things to the surface, both materially and socially. This installation embodies a precarious yet compassionate moment of contact through a careful composition of ‘waste’ materials.”

The exhibit opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, in the gallery, which is in Upper Alumni Hall. It continues through October 8. Additional faculty members scheduled for inclusion include Mike Applegate, adjunct; Zachary Davidson, adjunct; Erik Deerly, assistant professor of new media; Minda Douglas, associate professor of fine arts; Michael Koerner, assistant professor of new media; and Wayne Madsen, assistant professor of new media.

Gallery Director Tara Scott said the show gives faculty a chance to share their art with the campus and community.

“Throughout the year we get to see our students’ work, which is a product of our faculty and their teaching,” she said. “Rarely do we get to see what our faculty are creating. We have very creative people inspiring our students.”

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday and Friday. Admission and parking are free.
