Preparing students for careers, one rèsumè at a time

April 18, 2016
KOKOMO, Ind. — Ana Helms already has her first professional job interview under her belt — and she’s only a college freshman.

Helms feels more prepared for her future business career, after her Indiana University Kokomo Freshman Learning Community (FLC) participated in interviews with community volunteers. Each student created a résumé to be critiqued, and then answered questions in mock interviews.

“This was a helpful experience because now I am more knowledgeable about what employers are looking for,” said Helms, from Monticello. “I hope I have the opportunity to do something like this again soon.”

Dressed in their best professional attire, the freshmen met in small groups with community volunteers, for mock interviews, résumé reviews, and feedback about what employers look for when hiring. They answered students’ questions and provided valuable interview tips.

Adjunct faculty member Trinda Steckler, who leads the FLC for business students, said the volunteers provide a new perspective, as well as networking opportunities, for the class.

“This experience builds confidence for these students, allowing them to see themselves as future professionals,” she said. “The insights they bring to our classroom are invaluable.”

Jaqwanta Streeter, from Anderson, appreciated having first-hand knowledge of what employers look for in job applicants. Now, he is more confident with the encouragement from working professionals and the tools and resources to build his future career.

“I feel more prepared for future interviews after having this experience,” he said.

The course offers opportunities that are useful for the careers of the students in the course.

“This was a great chance to network and meet professionals in the community,” said Lane Pierce, Kokomo. “I would highly recommend taking this course even if it is not required for business students.”
