Bates, B.F.A. ’15, is a working artist, owner of Biz & Ink, an art studio in downtown Kokomo. She teaches lessons, creates her own works, and offers wine and canvas parties at the studio, at 102 North Main Street, Suite B.
“It’s really exciting to use what I went to school for, in my hometown, and to have an art business,” she said. “My dad made the joke, ‘What are you going to do with an art degree?’ I told him I would figure it out, and I have.”
She is one of seven Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates featured in the gallery’s first-ever alumni exhibition, which opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 in the Gallery, in Upper Alumni Hall. It continues through May 14. Admission is free, and free parking is available on campus.
The exhibition also includes work by Stephanie Britton, Jeni Singleton, Nicole Ingalls, Tarja Harney, Lori Brubaker, and Dusti Speight.
Bates is happy to exhibit her own work, and to see what the other alumni have done since graduating. She is also thrilled that IU Kokomo now has a downtown art gallery, just a few blocks from her studio.
“It is exciting to see what the alumni are working on, and that they are using what they learned in the fine arts program,” she said. “To be able to see how we can all progress together, and to help grow the art scene in Kokomo, that is super exciting to me.”
The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday and Friday.
