Free college financial aid help offered at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. — Students and families can access help with their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during a series of financial aid workshops at Indiana University Kokomo.

College Goal Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 21, kicks off the series, followed by five other free workshops, running through mid-March.

“We are thrilled to offer our services to all families in our region, whether they intend to attend IU Kokomo or another institution,” said Todd Gambill, vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management.

IU Kokomo will hold the free workshop in the Library, Rooms 144 and 148. No preregistration is required.

Participants should bring a completed 1040 tax return form, their parents’ W-2 forms if they are a dependent, and their own W-2 forms, as well as other 2015 income and benefits information. Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students 24 years or older may attend along and bring their own completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 form, or other income and benefit information. Those planning to attend are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov before coming to the event.

Financial aid professionals will go line by line through the FAFSA paperwork, explaining the document and answering questions. In less than one afternoon at a College Goal Sunday event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online. Those attending may fill out a survey at the end of the sessions, for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.

Future IU Kokomo free financial aid workshops will take place in the Library, Room 148, from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 24; 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 29; 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 8; and 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 10.

Free parking is available on campus.

The FAFSA forms is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans at most colleges, universities, and vocational/technical schools nationwide. It must be filled out by March 10 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid.
