“I have a whole different view on the importance of helping those in need,” said Hall, 18.
“Operation Jackson Street” is an initiative by one of the Freshman Learning Community groups at Indiana University Kokomo – helping local veterans at Jackson Street Commons, a housing facility for homeless veterans.
“The time that I have spent working with Jackson Street has allowed me to feel pride because I am helping people who fought for this country,” said Hall, Kokomo.
“It really makes me happy to be able to see them happy,” said Bailey Estes, 18. “They have done so much for our country that they deserve to be treated exceptionally.”
Carol Garber, adjunct professor of humanities, teaches the freshmen learning community course and has directed the collection of donations, planned a holiday dinner for some of the veterans, and coordinated a food drive on campus.
“Our goal was to help the veterans during the holiday season. We are very appreciative of their service to our country, and this is one small way we can give back to them,” said Garber.
Jackson Street Commons’ residents were able to see that young people in the community do thank them for their service and appreciate them.
“This was great for the veterans because it showed them that their service to the country is not forgotten,” said Ryan Wolf, case manager at Jackson Street Commons. “The donations came at a perfect time since it can be difficult for people to get out for food during the winter months.”
On Monday, November 30, Garber and the class delivered the collected items to Jackson Street while also planning a meal for a few of the veterans sponsored by Rozzi’s Catering Company. The students helped load all the donated items, which included about 15 pounds of meat, multiple large containers of pantry goods, and necessary personal items.
