This nationwide initiative designed to help end campus sexual assault and create awareness at universities across the country is also the program that Indiana University Kokomo will utilize during Sexual Assault Awareness Week beginning Monday, September 21.
“This week is about raising awareness about sexual assault and sexual violence,” said Sarah Sarber, dean of students. “We all play a role. No matter how small or large that role is, we can all make a difference.”
There will be red flags across campus all week, reminding people to stand up and speak out when they see a warning sign, or “red flag.”
On Monday and Thursday, students can sign an “It’s on Us” campaign pledge, take a quiz about sexual assault and sexual violence, and receive information about how to be an active bystander, and who to contact for help if needed. Resource tables will be available in the Kelley Student Center.
At 2 p.m. Monday, Jeffery Batis, assistant professor of psychology and Rosalyn Davis, clinical assistant professor of psychology, will discuss the psychological, biological, and legal aspects of sexual assault and the current dating scene in The Kelley Student Center Room 130 AC at 2 p.m.
“Beat the Blame Game,” designed to educate students on the false approach of blaming the victims, will take place at noon Tuesday in the Kelley Student Center Room 130 AC.
The final program, “Real Talk,” at 10 a.m. Wednesday, provides a place for students those sometimes awkward, but necessary questions, in a safe environment. Men will meet in the Cole Fitness Center Room 007, while women will meet in the Art Gallery.
“‘Real Talk’ is about having a frank discussion about sexual violence, sexual assault, and the issues surrounding sex in the time that we are in,” said Sarber. “We want students to have a chance to ask these questions in a safe place.
“It is important that we get this information out so students are aware of the resources available to them and how they can get the help they need,” she said. “By doing this, we can all help take care of one another.”
