“I look forward to a fun week of activities, as we take time out of our busy lives to stop and reflect on the impact that IU Kokomo has had on this region for the past 70 years,” said Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke. “The future is promising as we continue to grow our student population, remodel our facilities, and help more students realize their dreams of a college education.”
The celebration kicks off Monday, September 14, in Alumni Hall with “7 for 70” display that highlights campus progress during each decade, and will be available for viewing the entire week. In addition, there will be a “Time Wall” where the campus community can share their visions of where IU Kokomo will be in the next 70 years.
On Tuesday, the commemoration moves to Foster Park, for a community picnic. The event begins with a walk/run/bike/drive from campus at 11 a.m. The picnic will begin at noon, with a variety of great food to enjoy. In the afternoon, the campus honors the research and creative work of its faculty, with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Art Gallery.
Wednesday brings a variety of activities, including the annual golf outing, set to take place at Wildcat Creek Golf Course with a tee-off at noon. On campus, a surprise event for students is slated to begin at 11 a.m. The day will round off with a tailgate party and women’s volleyball game at Cougar Gym. The tailgate begins at 5:30 and game time is 7 p.m. Admission to the game is $5.
Thursday’s celebration showcases the campus’ diversity, with the first-ever Culture Bash. The multicultural fair, which includes a live band, cultural performances, food, trucks, and international booths, is open to the public. The first 500 attendees will receive a free T-shirt, and parking is free.
The anniversary celebration culminates with a student dance, starting at 8 p.m. Friday, September 18, in Alumni Hall. Bring on your best ‘70s moves as the theme for the night is “Throwback to the ‘70s.”
