Women's Basketball game 11-4-14Debut women's basketball gameCoach Whitney Farris is thankful for the program, and its assistance to members of the first-year team.

“It allows our program to provide student-athletes with financial assistance to help them succeed off and on the court,” she said. “We are so thankful for the generosity and support provided by those who donated to the endowment. The positive impact it will have on our program and players is beyond the X’s and O’s.

“We have seen so much support from the community in the short time our program has been around, and we couldn’t be more appreciative.”

The fund provides scholarships for women’s basketball players, which are crucially important when recruiting players, said Ryan Bowman, director of alumni relations and campus ceremonies, who worked with Community First Bank President Robb Blume to endow the scholarship.

“This scholarship allows us to grow and build our team, with student-athletes who want to earn an IU degree and be competitive in the NAIA,” he said.

“It is our pleasure to play a part in furthering the educational opportunities of the scholarship recipients, and in helping IU Kokomo continue to expand its impact in our community,” he said. “We believe strongly in the value of education for our young people, and in the important role our educational institutions play in our community.”

The women’s basketball team kicked off its inaugural season November 4. Coached by Kokomo native Farris, the team plays in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, of the NAIA.
