October 16, 2012

KOKOMO, Ind. — Successful entrepreneurs are those who can take concept from idea to market.

Ali JafariAli JafariAli Jafari, who created the online learning management system Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie calls "our greatest startup success," will talk about how to start with an idea, develop it and take it to market, in a presentation on Wednesday, October 24, at 5:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.

Erv Boschmann, interim dean of the School of Business, said small business is what will drive economic recovery, which is why it is important to encourage students to become entrepreneurs.

"Ali Jafari can talk about the academic aspect and the practical aspect of being an entrepreneur, because he's done it," Boschmann said. "He shows our students what they can accomplish with a great idea."

Jafari has created several successful online learning management systems, including the Oncourse program used on all IU campuses, and ANGEL learning. IU invested $130,000 in ANGEL learning, which sold to Blackboard Inc. for $100 million in 2009.

Jafari's presentation, at 5:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, is free and open to the public. The first 50 students to attend will receive a free T-shirt. Reservations may be made by calling Terri Butler at 765-455-9275 or e-mailing tbutler@iuk.edu
