KOKOMO, Ind. – Spring break for Indiana University Kokomo may be over, but the big dance of the year is just a couple weeks away. With the theme of “Kick It Up A Notch,” the second annual dance relay promises to have something for everyone – music, dancing, fun, tournaments, refreshments and raising funds for a good cause.
While students, faculty, and staff participate in the festivities, they’ll also be helping raise funds and awareness for the Howard County Family Service Association domestic violence shelter.
The 12-hour dance will begin at noon Friday, April 8, in Alumni Hall, and is a multi-group effort sponsored by the Student Athletic Board, American Democracy Project, Student Alumni Association (IUKSAA), and the Student Union Board.
“We knew before last year’s first dance relay that we were going to make this an annual event,” said Justin Enyart, vice president of the IUKSAA and a junior majoring in informatics. “We had such a great turnout and surpassed our fundraising goal. Everyone had such a good time and it was for a good cause. We’ve been really excited about this year’s relay and have already had some students ask about it.”
Due to last year’s success, organizers have added more activities this year and are looking for at least 100 participants to help reach their goal of $5,000. Last year, 11 teams participated, raising more than $1,100.
“We’re going to have all kinds of fun events so that those who aren’t interested in dancing will have other activities to participate in,” said Julie Fischer, secretary of IUKSAA and a junior majoring in business and marketing. “We’re going to have ping pong and cornhole tournaments, and a photo booth, too. This event is about raising funds for a good cause and having a good time. We encourage everyone to come out, dance, participate in the tournaments and just have a good time. This is our blowout dance of the year.”
Cost is $5 per person. Enyart said teams of five or more can sign up, or individuals can register to participate also.
Music will be provided by two local DJs – Jerry Stroke and Mike Faucett – who will work in six-hour shifts. Genre of music will include rock, pop, oldies, country, hip hop, and rhythm and blues. Attendees will also have a chance to take the center stage during karaoke.
“We’re also going to have prizes for the best dancers, best costumes and biggest fundraisers,” said Fischer. “For the costumes, we look for a little bit of everything – most original, and cool ideas that express individuality.”
Prizes include gift cards, trophies and a pizza party. Teams may sign up for the event in the alumni office located in the Main Building, Room 125.
In addition to all the fun, there will be a presentation given by the Family Service Association about domestic violence and how to support victims of domestic violence.
A silent auction will be set up in Alumni Hall the week leading up to the dance relay, from Monday, April 4, to Thursday, April 7, featuring a variety of items donated by local businesses. Businesses or persons wishing to offer merchandise for the silent auction should contact Enyart at firstname.lastname@example.org or Fischer at email@example.com.
