New online courses, academic opportunities

January 3, 2011

KOKOMO, Ind. – Six new online courses are available this spring semester at Indiana University Kokomo – and there is still time to enroll for these and other courses before classes begin on Monday, January 10.

“Academic excellence and student success are at the heart of our enterprise,” said Chancellor Michael Harris. “These additions to our online course offerings are just the beginning of enhanced, intentional efforts to meet the academic needs of our region. We are working on several new programs.”

The following courses are now offered 100 percent online: Elementary Composition 2, Intro to New Media Communication, General Psychology, Intro to Emergency Management, Public Administration and Emergency Management, and Crime and Public Policy.

Another new program is the Transition-to-Teaching which offers individuals with a bachelor’s the opportunity to earn the proper credit hours and credentials for a teaching degree. This program supports the recruitment and retention of highly qualified mid-career professionals, including qualified paraprofessionals, and recent college graduates who have not majored in education to teach in the regional school districts through the development of a new alternative route to certification.

In addition, two international study courses have openings for students interested in overseas travel to enhance their educational experiences. The Hispanic Culture and Healthcare practicum is a three credit-hour class that involves a nine-day trip to Guatemala. The second is a one-credit, eight-week class exploring Korean culture, health care, and media – followed by a two-credit eight-week class that also includes 12 to 14 days travel in mid-May.

Students who have not yet registered should meet with their academic advisor to discuss schedules and degree requirements. For more information, please visit the IU Kokomo Web site at www.iuk.edu/student_services/registrar/register.html.

Indiana University Kokomo serves north central Indiana.
